John Johnston (1603-1675) was a scholar, physician, and naturalist. Descended from Scottish nobility, he earned his first degree at the University of St. Andrews, where he studied theology, scholastic philosophy, and Hebrew. He was excluded from attending the Catholic Jagiellonian University since he was a Calvinist. He published his work, Enchiridion historiae naturalis, between 1625 and 1628, which was later translated into English in 1657. He received his first M.D. in Leiden, followed by his second M.D. from Cambridge, and went on to receive a Doctorate from both of these universities also.
